Sleep abnormalities

Sleep plays an essential role in our health so when we receive inadequate sleep on a regular basis, it can have a negative effect on our health. It is important to note that not all sleep abnormalities are caused by a neurologic condition, however, there are a number of neurological conditions that can disrupt normal sleep patterns.

Primary neurologic sleep disorders include:

  • Central nervous system hypersomnia
  • Central sleep apnea
  • Circadian rhythm disorders
  • Fatal familial insomnia
  • Narcolepsy
  • Parasomnias
  • REM sleep behaviour disorder

Treatment for neurological sleep disorders may include:

  • Continuous positive airway pressure - a machine used to treat patients with obstructive sleep apnea
  • Cognitive behavioural therapy depending upon the sleep disorder
  • Medication
